NuvaRing under Fire Again – Wrongful Death Action Case Filed
More than 50 lawsuits have been filed around the United States against the manufacturers and other parties relevant to the birth control product known as NuvaRing, and now comes word that a wrongful death lawsuit was filed against Organon USA, Inc., Organon Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc., Organon International, Inc., Akzo Nobel NV, Organon Biosciences, N.V., and Schering-Plough Corporation (NYSE: SGP) in Essex County New Jersey.
NuvaRing Side Effects include blood clots and pulmonary thrombosis.
The complaint filed alleges that the defendants not only knew about the potential side effects associated with NuvaRing, but even concealed this information from the medical community, from the general public and from the FDA when it sought and gained approval for distribution of the product in October of 2001.
NuvaRing is a birth control product that’s designed to prevent ovulation and to minimize sperm penetration, and it’s supposed to be inserted near the cervix. Specifically, the product works by releasing two synthetic hormones, etonogestrel (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen), into the woman’s system to provide this result.
Problems have been arising in recent years, and the side effects linked to NuvaRing include the increase of the risk of blood clots given the high amounts of hormones that are directly released into women’s bodies. Blood clotting can lead to pulmonary thrombosis, the eventual need for amputations and even death in certain cases.
Death is the tragic result that befell the victim in this case, 32-year-old Kelly Bozicev, who was prescribed this product by her doctor in May of 2007, but in December, she suffered a seizure and died en route to the hospital. She left behind a husband and two small children.
